Today, let’s talk about something that’s been on my mind lately: friendship red flags. We all know how important our girl squad is, but sometimes, we need to recognize when a friendship might not be as healthy as it seems. So, grab your favorite drink, and let’s have a heart-to-heart about some of the signs that a friendship might be waving some red flags.
We’ve all met someone who’s sweet as pie to us but turns into Regina George around others. It can be so confusing, right? You think, “She’s always so nice to me, so she must be a good person.” But here’s the thing: how she treats other people says a lot about her character. If she’s quick to snap at the waitress or talk down to the cashier, it’s a sign that her kindness has conditions. Remember, true kindness isn’t selective.
Pay attention to her friendship history. If she doesn’t have any long-term girlfriends, it could be a red flag. I’m not saying every woman needs to have a tight-knit girl gang from kindergarten, but if she cycles through friends faster than you go through Netflix shows, it might be worth considering why those friendships didn’t last. Sometimes, it’s a pattern of behavior that prevents deeper connections.
Spontaneity can be fun—midnight ice cream runs and unplanned road trips are the best! But if your friend is constantly making reckless decisions without thinking about the consequences, it might be time to pump the brakes. Impulsiveness can lead to situations that are not only risky for her but can also drag you into unnecessary drama.
We all love a little admiration from our friends, but there’s a difference between genuine admiration and someone who envies what you have without appreciating the effort it took to get there. If she’s constantly making comments about how “lucky” you are without acknowledging your hard work, it can start to feel invalidating. You deserve friends who recognize and celebrate your achievements, not just the end results.
It’s important to listen and be there for our friends, but if she’s always the victim in every story, it might be a sign of something deeper. Everyone has tough times, but if she never takes responsibility for her part in conflicts and always blames others, it can become emotionally exhausting. Healthy friendships involve accountability and growth, not a constant narrative of “poor me.”
Being a social butterfly is great, but there’s a difference between being friendly and lacking loyalty. If she’s always surrounded by people but doesn’t have any deep, trusting relationships, it can be a red flag. True friendship is about more than just having fun; it’s about being there for each other through thick and thin. If she’s spreading herself too thin, she might not be giving you the loyalty and support you deserve.
Friendships, like all relationships, require balance and mutual respect. It’s okay to recognize these red flags and take a step back to evaluate whether the friendship is healthy for you. Remember, it’s not about judging your friend harshly but about ensuring your own emotional well-being. We all deserve friendships that lift us up and make us feel valued.
So, next time you notice these signs, take a moment to reflect. It’s perfectly okay to set boundaries and protect your peace. After all, your tribe should vibe with you, not drain you.
XOXO,
Kendra
