If you’ve ever tried to research hair extension pricing before booking a consultation, you already know how frustrating it can be. Vague quotes. Per-row fees that don’t tell the full story. Maintenance costs that nobody mentions until you’re already committed. A total investment that looks very different on the day of your appointment than it did when you first inquired.
We think that’s a problem. So let’s talk about how extension install and maintenance pricing actually works, and why Mosaic Beauty + Boutique does it differently than most salons in Amarillo.
What You’re Actually Paying For When You Get Extensions
Before we talk numbers and models, it helps to understand what the service side of extensions actually involves. The hair itself is always a separate cost. That’s true everywhere, regardless of where you get your extensions done. The hair cost and quality differs from salon to salon, but that’s for a different post on a different day. What you’re paying the salon for is the skill, time, and expertise required to:
- Install your extensions properly for your specific hair type and density
- Blend and cut them seamlessly into your natural hair
- Color match or tone them if needed
- Move them up or reinstall them as your hair grows
- Educate you on home care so your investment lasts
That’s not a simple service. Done well, it’s one of the most technically demanding things a stylist does. And how a salon prices that service tells you a lot about how they approach it.
How Most Salons Charge for Extension Installs
The most common pricing model in the extension industry is per-row pricing — a set fee for each row or track installed, separate from your color and cut costs. On the surface this sounds simple and transparent, but it has a significant flaw.
Per-row pricing doesn’t account for the actual time and expertise required to do your install properly. Two clients can have the same number of rows and completely different installs, different hair density, different growth patterns, different placement complexity, and yet receive the same quote. The stylist has no incentive to slow down and customize the placement because they’re compensated the same regardless of how carefully they work.
The result is a pricing model that unintentionally rewards speed over quality. That’s not good for your hair.
How Mosaic Charges — And Why It’s Different
At Mosaic, we charge an premium hourly rate for extension installs and move-ups rather than a per-row fee. We are one of the only salons in Amarillo pricing extensions this way, and it’s a deliberate choice.
Here’s what that means for you:
It rewards quality over speed. When your stylist is compensated for their time rather than the number of rows completed, they can focus entirely on doing the job right. Precise sectioning, careful placement, thorough blending that doesn’t get rushed, because there’s no incentive to rush.
It’s honest about what you’re actually paying for. The real value of an extension install isn’t the hardware going into your hair, it’s the trained hands doing the work. Hourly pricing reflects that honestly.
It scales fairly to your actual needs. Finer hair requires more precise placement. Fuller installs take more time. Hourly pricing means you pay for exactly what your hair actually requires, not a flat rate that either overcharges simpler installs or cuts corners on complex ones.
Your artist’s rate reflects their experience and demand. At Mosaic, each stylist sets their hourly rate based on their training, certifications, and the demand for their chair. A newer extension artist and a senior extension specialist are genuinely different services, and our pricing is transparent about that distinction. You choose your artist knowing exactly what their time is worth.
How Maintenance Is Priced
This is the part most salons gloss over during a consultation, and it’s one of the most important parts of understanding your total investment.
Every semi-permanent extension method requires regular maintenance. Hand-tied extensions need move-ups as your natural hair grows. Tape-ins need to be removed, repositioned, and reinstalled. Halos need periodic adjustments. The frequency and cost of these appointments varies by method and by how fast your hair grows.
At Mosaic, maintenance appointments are priced the same way as installs, hourly, based on your artist’s rate. That means your move-up appointment is priced fairly for the time it actually takes, not inflated with a flat fee that doesn’t reflect the work involved.
We’ll give you a realistic maintenance timeline and cost expectation during your consultation so you can budget for the full investment, not just the first appointment.
What a Complete Extension Investment Includes
When you’re budgeting for extensions at Mosaic, here’s the full picture of what the service side involves:
The hair. Custom matched for color, quality tested for longevity, and price ranges for everyone.
The installation. Charged hourly based on your artist’s rate. Time varies by method and the complexity of your specific install. This hourly rate includes your color service time during your appointment if applicable.
Color matching or toning if needed. If your extensions require toning or blending to match your natural hair, that’s a separate color service priced accordingly. We’ll tell you upfront whether this is likely before you book.
The cut and blend. After installation, your extensions are cut and blended into your natural hair. This step is not optional, it’s what makes extensions look like your hair instead of extensions.
Ongoing move-ups and maintenance. Scheduled and priced consistently so you always know what to expect at each appointment.
Questions to Ask Any Salon Before Booking Extensions
Whether you book with us or somewhere else, these are the questions worth asking before you commit:
- How is the installation priced — per row, hourly, or flat rate?
- What does a typical maintenance appointment cost and how often will I need one?
- Is the cut and blend included or separate?
- Will I need color services to match the extensions to my hair?
- Do you offer a free consultation before I commit?
A salon that can answer all of these questions clearly and confidently before you book is one that respects your investment. If the answers are vague or the full picture only comes out later, pay attention to that.
Start With a Free 15-Minute Consultation
At Mosaic, we offer a complimentary 15-minute extension consultation before you commit to anything. This is where we look at your hair in person, talk through your goals and lifestyle, recommend the right method for you, and walk you through exactly what your service investment will look like — install, maintenance, and everything in between.
No surprises. No pressure. Just honest answers so you can make the right decision for your hair.
